Computers and monitors use up about 3% of residential and 7% of commercial use in California. Cutting idle usage will allow the state to save a lot of energy. Executing this plan statewide would cut emissions of greenhouse gases by about 700,000 a year. VentureBeat is also reporting that the plan would save people of the state an estimated $373 million dollars annually.
The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) is working closely with the California Energy commission to make this plan a reality. The idea was first proposed in March of 2015, and since then they have been trying to make the idea a reality. VentureBeat is also reporting that the NRDC is working to make the plan as inclusive as possible. Officials want the plan to include more updated computers so that businesses and people with more modern models will not be able to take advantage of loopholes.
