Terror threats and attacks have constantly been an issue in middle eastern countries of Asia in recent years. Thought these countries have tried to recover from terrorism by establishing Universities and moving forward, incidents keep occurring. Another one has struck a University in Afghanistan. According to BBC News, several students, faculty, and staff have been killed and/or injured in an attack at a University in Kabul. The incident has left the area in much turmoil.
BBC News is also reporting that several lives were lost during this incident. 13 people were killed. Seven of the people dead were students of the facility and the rest were staff members and law enforcement officers. Two of the attackers were also killed by law enforcement at the scene of the crime. About 35 students and nine police officers were also injured during the incident. Law enforcement was able to rescue about 750 people from the terrorist attack.
The incident allegedly took place during a regular school day. Officials are saying that the attackers stormed the area with rifles and explosives. With these weapons, they began to destroy the campus. Students and staff used furniture to barricade themselves into classrooms. Many even took to social media to try and get some help. One of the people who used this method is Masoud Hossaini. Hossaini is an award winning photojournalist. In his tweets, he expressed that he felt like he may be in his finally minutes. Hossaini was one of the lucky victims to survive the attack.
The university is located in Kabul, one of the major cities of Afghanistan. The school was established by people of the United States in an effort to help the nation regroup and refocus after some of the chaos they’ve been subjected to. The University offers students classes in English and professional development. They also offer a few degree programs. Many of those that attend are non-traditional students and work jobs while attending classes part-time.
No people or organizations have come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.As more information surfaces, one can only hope the violence in the area comes to a stop.
