Talk about a boy genius.
Jeremy Schuler has enrolled at the prestigious Ivy League School, Cornell University, which in and of itself is a major accomplishment. But to do it at the ripe young age of 12 years old is an altogether different achievement.
Indeed, the pre-teen out of Grand Prairie, Texas will become the youngest freshman to ever enroll at Cornell University. Despite having the knowledge that could very well exceed some of his fellow students, there is no denying that he is still only a child.
“From the beginning, he was physically advanced, very strong,” said his mother, Harrey Schuler. Perhaps the advancement came from his mother, who is a proud owner of a doctorate in aerospace engineering. Or maybe his smarts come from his father, who also is an aerospace engineer. But it appears the logical explanation was the fact that both parents took the time to home-school Jeremy, which saw him reading books in English and Korean (his mother’s native tongue) by age 2. At 5 he tackled the “Lord of the Rings,” and at 6 he was on to Calculus. Even his SAT and AP scores at the age of 10 were advanced enough to where he could have enrolled in college at an even younger age, though his parents advised waiting a few more years.
And so now, at 12 years old, Jeremy Schuler is a college student. How are the classes going for him?
“The classes are kind of easy so far, but I know they’ll be harder pretty soon,” he said.
The Dean of Engineering at Cornell, Lance Collins, sees this as an exciting time for both Jeremy and the college:
“It’s risky to extrapolate, but if you look at his trajectory and he stays on course, one day he’ll solve some problem we haven’t even conceived of. That’s pretty exciting.”
The Schulers made the move from Texas to Ithaca, New York to accommodate for Jeremy’s schooling. Jeremy would be a part of a legacy at Cornell. His father is a professor there in the engineering school, it’s where his father received his degree, and where Jeremy is now an undergrad.
Wow.
