Living in New York is often times akin to experiencing the best dream ever. There are always so many places to go, things to do, and people to see. Although many will agree that there is one nightmare to this paradise: sleeping in an apartment the size of your childhood room. Unless you’re rolling in dough, you probably don’t have the means to get a bigger space or renovate your home.

Luckily for us tiny apartment owners, there are many ways we can make our space feel and look bigger. Here are five design hacks that will make your home appear bigger and better without breaking the bank:

1. Add a Mirror

Mirrors can take a small room and make it look significantly bigger. Hang a long vertical one across from a window to reflect the light, or hang a horizontal one across from your favorite piece of art. Everywhere you turn you’ll see your favorite picture!

2. Incorporate Multipurpose Furniture

When you’re trying to organize your small space, it’s hard not to just shove all of your stuff in a corner and call it a day. Thankfully there are plenty of affordable choices when it comes to multi-functional furniture. From storage ottomans to tables that double as chairs, there are options for every budget.

3. Add Some Shelves

Making use of your wall space is another great way to cut down on clutter. This shelf from Ikea is great because you can display items, like books, on top but hide anything you don’t want to be seen, like keys, in the handy drawers.

4. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Small knickknacks scattered throughout your space will only distract the eye. Instead, choose fewer and bigger items to display.

5. Create Smaller Spaces Within the Room

If you’re living in a small apartment, designating certain areas for different purposes will make your home feel, well, more homey. Add a rug or mat to distinguish each section from the others.
