While the new installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise opened with roughly 23.4 million dollars, Disney’s Pirates has topped Paramount’s Baywatch.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opened Friday in 4,276 theaters bringing in roughly 23.4 million dollars. The projected domestic debut for the four-day weekend on Disney’s Pirates 5 is between 75 million dollars to 78 million dollars. Even though it is having been a good start for the fifth installment, the film marks the lowest opening from any of the titles in the franchise.
The franchise was never a favorite among the critics having a rating of 32 percent in Rotten Tomatoes, the same as their previous film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. However, the movie audiences rate it with an A- CinemaScore more than what critics give it.
Besides the favorability of the audiences for the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the consumption of the United States is very weak. The hope is for the film to make it big overseas to cover any deficit it lacked domestically. It has already made 86.5 million dollars internationally for a global total of 110 million dollars through Friday. The global debut for the movie is to be 275 million dollars. In China, where the movie hit the theaters Friday, brought a total of 21.3 million dollars on opening day.
Baywatch, on the other end, was played in 3,647 theaters bringing in an estimate of 5.7 million dollars on Friday. Paramount and Skydance decided to release the movie before the four-day weekend which grossed 4.5 million dollars on Thursday, its first day. The projected four-day weekend gross is of 21 million dollars and 26 million dollars on the total of five-days.
As for ratings among the audience, movie audiences have given Baywatch a rating of B+ CinemaScore.
Even though both movies are getting low rates from critics, they are getting good ratings from moviegoers.
