They’re man’s best friend, guides for the blind, security on one’s property and now they are also therapists. Well, not therapist per se, as dogs would not be able to check in the affirmative where it says “can they speak?”. But they are therapeutic and healing in many different ways.
This is not necessarily new information. Dogs of all breed and mixes have become part of families since manhood can remember and even been trained to perform household tasks. But now, dogs can officially become messengers of therapy by their owners signing them up via the Alliance for Therapy Dogs (ATD) . The qualifications are many and include the dog being open to the presence and touch of strangers, all vaccines taken care of and documented, to be clean and well groomed, and successfully passing three supervised visits in the field. No simple task, but a noble one it is/
The Alliance for Therapy Dogs is a no nonsense organization which seems commendable for their work in the industry t. The dogs visit places like hospitals, senior citizen centers, homes for special care, amongst other medical venues, so it makes sense that the joining process is vetted.
But it’s not only those in medical need that can reap the benefits of therapy dogs. In fact, just over a week ago, in middle of finals at Yeshiva University, a team of therapy dogs was brought it to help alleviate some of the stress test taking and studying bring along. Students were delighted and excited for the break and the chance to snuggle with some truly adorable dogs and it seemed as if the dogs enjoyed as well.
ATD seems like a great organization that advocates and helps run a service that benefits the multitudes of the nation. It also helps to know that ATD as a whole and all its dog owners, are not for profit, meaning all their services are free. It’s the little things that count and sometimes snuggling with an adorable little Maltese as its small tongue licks up your face, is exactly what you need before an exam. So, next time, when you’re in need, who are you going to call to save the day? Therapy dogs!
