Massive video game developer Bethesda, of “Fallout” and “The Elder Scrolls” fame, recently clashed with Sony.
Bethesda released “The Elder Scrolls: Legends” last year for PC and mobile phone users. The game will soon be made available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch users. As such, Bethesda is currently attempting to help its users carry their current progress over to the newly available platforms. When it comes to graphics and gameplay, the game does not differ between platforms. Bethesda attempted to use this fact to its favor and offer players a better experience.
Bethesda’s senior vice president stated:
The way the game works right now on Apple, Google, Steam, and Bethesda.net, it doesn’t matter where you buy your stuff — if you play it on another platform, that stuff is there. It doesn’t matter what platform you play on — you play against everyone else who is playing at that moment.
However, Sony has limited the game’s cross-platform capabilities on the PS4. Sony has done this before with Epic Games’ “Fortnite.” Bethesda, unlike Epic Games, has been bold regarding the subject. The company has stated that if Sony does not allow cross-console gaming capabilities on the PS4 for “Legends,” then Bethesda will not release the game for the PS4 at all. Bethesda’s vice president, in a somewhat mocking manner, stated:
There’s no, ‘oh, it’s easier to control, or it has a better frame rate on this system.’ It’s a strategy card game. It doesn’t matter.”
Even though cross-console multiplayer games may be commonplace in the near future, Sony seems to be holding this future back. The impact that Sony’s choice will have on its console sales has yet to be felt.
