“Black Panther” Takes Over the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards.

The 2018 MTV Movie and TV Award show was full of laughs, memorable speeches, and the domination of the successful “Black Panther” film that won four of its seven nominated awards.

Host, Tiffany Haddish opened the awards with a hilarious “Black Panther” parody. Taking M’baku’s role as T’Challa’s challenger, Haddish had what was probably the best cold open the award show has ever had. With cameos from Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah, the opening had non-stop comedy followed by approval from Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa), Winston Duke (M’Baku), and Michael B. Jordan (Erik Kilmonger) themselves as they cracked up in the audience.

Tiffany Haddish is actually the first black women to host the MTV Movie and TV Awards. She joked in her monologue about the achievement saying, “usually when a black girl talks on TV this much on MTV she’s normally just got catfished.”

After rapping her own version of Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow,” Haddish targeted celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Nick Jonas, Michael B. Jordan, Gaten Matarazzo and Chris Pratt. Each actor happily went along with Haddish’s jokes, which made the show that much better. There’s nothing worse than a crowd that cannot stand corny jokes, (*cough* Katy Perry hosting the VMA’s *cough*).

To solidify Haddish’s phenomenal comedic abilities, the host won the MTV Movie and TV award for Best Comedic Performance for her role in the hilarious film, “Girls Trip.”

Surprising Winners…

Madeline Petsch surprisingly won Best Scene Stealer for her role as Cheryl Blossom in “Riverdale.” Petsch beat out fellow nominees Letitia Wright, Tiffany Haddish, Taika Waititi, and Dacre Montgomery. In her speech, Petsch acknowledged how she did not think that she was even going to win the award and kept her speech short by just thanking her fans.

The Losers Club from the horror film “It” won the award for Best on Screen Team. The talented group beat out other strong nominees like, “Black Panther,” and “Stranger Things.” The young cast thanked their cast and crew, moms, and fans. They also mentioned how they admired the fact that the fans appreciated the true bond that the Losers Club has on and off screen.

Average Performances…

The award show, however, did lack in the musical act department. The first performance was from R&B duo Chloe x Halle who will be opening for Beyoncé and Jay-Z this summer. Their performance of “The Kids Are Alright,” was just that, alright.

The second performance was Nick Jonas and Mustard, who performed their song “Anywhere.” The solo Jonas brother impressed the crowd with his strong vocals, but lacked in the choreography department, as he just walked around the stage with Mustard singing the catchy tune.

“Black Panther” Dominates…

Chadwick Boseman beat Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Grant Gustin (Flash), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and, Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and won Best Hero. In his speech, Boseman thanked the fans and also acknowledged a real-life hero. James Shaw Junior who fought off the Waffle House shooter in Tennessee was brought on stage by Boseman and given his golden popcorn for his heroic act.

Next, Michael B. Jordan won Best Villain for his killer performance as Erik Kilmonger in the monumental film. Jordan thanked fans for loving his villain then jokingly told fans that Boseman told Jordan to tell fans to stop saying “Wakanda forever,” because, “it’s getting old” the camera then cuts to Boseman hysterically laughing.

Boseman wins again… this time for, the Best Performance in a Movie. In his second speech of the night, Boseman thanks his parents, Ryan Coogler the director of the film, and his cast including the powerful females and epic villain. “You can’t be good a hero without a good villain,” Boseman said to Jordan.

Finally, “Black Panther” beat its counterpart film, “Avengers: Infinity War,” for Best Movie. Boseman, Jordan, and Duke accepted the award. Jordan addressed how the film squashed the stereotype of an all-black casted film not drawing in a big crowd, and also addressed that this film is not just for the black community, it’s “universal.” Duke also thanked fans for, “not only investing in a beautiful story but investing in a continued conversation for what this industry and what this culture can achieve.”

Powerful Speeches…

Keiynan Lonsdale and Nick Robinson from the LGBTQ film, “Love, Simon” won MTV’s iconic award for Best Kiss. Lonsdale took the opportunity to give a powerful speech about acceptance towards the LGTBQ community. “You can live your dreams and kiss someone, no matter what gender they are,” Lonsdale says. This wasn’t the only memorable speech of the night.

The rapper, Common presented the Trailblazer award to Lena Waithe. Waithe was the first black woman to win an Emmy, specifically for best writer for the TV series, “Master of None.” Waithe started her speech by defining the word, trailblazer and how the word actually means pioneer and innovator. She then went on to thank the “Paris is Burning” documentary that takes a look at Harlem culture in the 1980s. Waithe acknowledged and thanked the black stars of the film, she wanted to “give them the glory they deserve,” in a generation that is more accepting of powerful black men and women.

14-year-old, Millie Bobby Brown won the award for Best Performance in a Show, for her role as Eleven in “Stranger Things.” The young actress could not be there in person to accept the award due to a split knee cap. But, in a pre-recorded message, the brit had a powerful message about bullying for both kids and adults. “If you don’t have anything nice to say just don’t say it, there should be no space in this world for bullying and I’m not going to tolerate it and neither should any of you,” Brown advised anyone who doesn’t realize how appreciated and worthy they are, to message her on Instagram.

Finally, Chris Pratt was presented the Generation Award by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” co-star Bryce Dallas Howard and “Parks and Recreation” co-star Aubrey Plaza. In Pratt’s speech, he thanked his family and son. The Guardians actor also wanted to send a message to the next “generation” starting by saying, “I accept the responsibility as your elder” then gives them nine rules that they should follow. The rules included: to breathe, be careful with your soul, be strong and humble and be bigger than a bully, “earn it, no matter what it is,” believe in God because, “God is real and he loves you, believe that,” learn to pray “its easy and so good for your soul,” and finally that nobody is perfect, “if you learn to accept that you will have grace.”
