Charles Wasko, the mayor of a small Pennsylvania borough, is being asked to resign by other officials following a slew of racist Facebook pictures posted on his account. The mayor of West York, Charles Wasko reportedly posted these pictures over the summer and even included ones aimed at the first family.
Officials are asking Wasko to resign after pictures of a monkey appeared on his Facebook page that said it was a picture of Michelle Obama as well as a wagon of orangutans that captioned “moving day at the White House.”
These posts are not the only offensive content that have come from the Facebook page, nor are they the most recent. Wasko has also maid posts calling Obama and Hillary Clinton the leaders of ISIS, Hillary behind bars and various other offensive posts. One of the more controversial one pictured Clint Eastwood holding a noose with the text “Barry this rope is for you. Wanna bring that empty chair over here!”
When the York Daily Record reportedly reached Wasko on Thursday, he described the response to his posts as “bulls—” and hung up on the reporter.
The position of mayor in West York is an unpaid one, meaning Wasko cannot be removed through legislative means.
The West York Council President Shawn Mauck told CNN on Thursday that Wasko’s “actions have been absolutely deplorable,” and said he does not have the power to remove the mayor from his position but “the community itself and colleagues have reached out to him and asked for his resignation.” Mauck has not been able to get in touch with the mayor.
Mauck added that the council plans to address the issue of Wasko’s post on Monday through a censure vote to “censure him and formally distance our government from those actions.”
The West York Council President stated the posts are a result of the “age of (Donald) Trump” and that “it’s time that we start pushing back and say no to this kind of rhetoric.”
