Netflix has recently given Chris Rock $40 million dollars for his two new stand-up comedy specials.
Amazon, Hulu, and HBO also made generous bids for Rock’s comedy specials. HBO was an obvious favorite for the comedic specials since the network used to host The Chris Rock Show, but Netflix outbid their offer.
The new Netflix comedy specials mark the comedian’s return to stand-up after a long eight-year hiatus. Recently Chris Rock has recently been seen as a comedic host for the 2016 Oscars.
Ted Sarandos, the Netflix chief content officer, commented that Chris Rock is a beloved actor and director, who’s stand-up has transformed him into a comic royalty. Sarandos stated that because there is no one like him, Netflix wanted to give Rock all the creative leeway he needed and provide him a perfect home for his incredible talent and content.
Chris Rock stated that he is very excited to be working with Ted and all the good people who make up the Netflix team. He ended his statement commenting that he can’t wait to get back on stage.
Chris Rock is one of the many high-profile comedians who have landed prosperous deals with Netflix for their stand-up segments. Netflix has been homes to comedians like Aziz Ansari, Chelsea Handler, Cedric the Entertainer, and Patton Oswalt. Other comedians like Larry the Cable Guy, David Cross, and Chris Tucker also have their comedic specials on the streaming service.
Lisa Nishimura, Netflix’s VP of original documentary and comedy, commented that Netflix is now becoming one of the best destinations for stand-up. Nishimura also stated that Netflix is bringing new comedians with distinctive humor and voices to over 190 countries around the globe.
Chris Rock has recently directed for HBO’s comedy special Amy Schumer: Live at the Appolo segment last year. Rock has won four Emmys and three Grammy’s in his comedic career. Rock has also acted in feature films like Death at a Funeral, Head of State, Grown Ups, and Grown Ups 2.
