Prolific director Christopher Nolan is most famous for directing the widely-praised Dark Knight trilogy starring Christian Bale as Batman, as well as more recent works such as Inception and Interstellar. In total, his science fiction and comic book related work has made him one of the most well-known directors of the current period. His next project is a sharp and intriguing turn in setting: World War II.
A teaser for his latest film, titled Dunkirk, has been released, revealing the early World War II setting and showing off some interesting shots. Take a look:
The impressive cast thus far includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance. Music for the film will be produced by the well-known Hans Zimmer. In all, it’s shaping up to be an impressive movie based on the names involved alone.
For those interested in the history around the film’s setting, “Dunkirk” refers to the Dunkirk evacuation that took place in June of 1940, in the early years of World War II. Also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, the operation saw the rescue of over 330,000 Allied soldiers from the shores of France, where they were trapped and surrounded by the German army.
The rescue proved crucial to the Allied success later in the war. It was a vital boost in morale that likely allowed the British to endure the German siege of Britain that followed, and the sheer number of personnel retrieved prevented a total German victory.
The “ticking” heard in the reveal trailer conveys a great sense of tension, as the Allies had extremely limited time (three days) to withdraw the massive numbers of troops from the shores of France. Judging by the shot with the packed troops aboard a transport cowering before the sound of incoming aircraft, there will be some impressive visual spectacle on display in the upcoming war thriller.
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is set to be released in theaters on July 21st, 2017.
