The Cleveland Browns have traded outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick in 2017.
The move comes only as a mild shock to Browns fans who have waited the last three seasons for Mingo to develop into their perennial pass rusher for the team. Mingo’s size and physical stamina garnered him the starting role, but his inconsistent play and lack of big play-making ability has been criticized.
Mingo will join his former teammate in Jabaal Sheard who has proved to be a great acquisition for the Patriots. Sheard was a positive force at pass rushing and forcing fumbles for the Browns, but had his most productive campaign with New England in 2015 when he accounted for 8 sacks. The Patriots see a lot of work that can be done with Mingo and given the right coaching in New England, he might be able to become a pro-bowl caliber player.
As for the Browns, Mingo’s name adds to the list of first round woes for the Browns. Since 1999, the Browns have had a majority of high first round draft picks but most have been pitiful. Between the 10 first round picks between 2007 and 2014, only three are currently on the roster. In 2o12, the Browns drafted Running-back Trent Richardson with the third pick who was on his way out after one rookie campaign and two games into the 2013 season. The Browns also selected Quarterback Brandon Weeden later in the round who’s rash decision making in the pocket sent him out after 2013. Mingo was taken in the 2013 draft. In 2014 the Browns selected Cornerback Justin Gilbert at number 8 and Quarterback Johnny Manziel later in the round. Both have possessed a lack of commitment to the game and Manziel’s story can very well become feature drama film. Gilbert has not been able remain on the playing field and is on his last straw to impress the coaching staff.
Mingo has the opportunity to play for an organization that is best at developing its players. For the Browns, it was probably best to move on from Mingo.
The Patriots will be in Cleveland to face the Browns on October 9th. The game will also feature the return of Tom Brady and Josh Gordon from their suspensions.
