Colin Firth is reportedly in negotiations to join Emily Blunt in the new Mary Poppins Returns film. In the new Disney film, Firth is expected to play William Weatherall Wilkins, who is the president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.
The movie takes place twenty-five years after the original Mary Poppins film storyline. Michael and Jane Banks, who are being played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, who are all grown up. The siblings as older adults suddenly get a visit from the magical nanny, who is trying to help them heal from a personal loss.
The new film also is set to star Meryl Streep, who is playing Poppins cousin. Emily Blunt is playing the lead role and title character. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Broadway Hamilton star, is set to play a street lamplighter named Jack.
Mary Poppins Returns will be directed and produced by Rob Marshall. Other producers for the project include John DeLuca and Marc Platt.
The new Disney film will be written by Oscar nominee David Magee. The film is adapted from P.L. Travers novel The Mary Poppins Stories. Marc Shaiman is also writing a brand new musical score for the film. Scott Wittman and Shaiman are also expected to be writing the film’s original songs.
Colin Firth has had a busy acting year with Bridget Jones’s Baby and Genius premiering in theaters consecutively.
Firth has also starred in the spy action film Kingsman: The Secret Service. The actor is set to reprise his role as Harry Hart in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 16th 2017. Reportedly the Kingsman sequel is currently in its filming stage of production.
Firth is also a producer for the critically acclaimed drama film Loving. Loving is a 2016 historical drama about the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court’s decision of Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated state laws from prohibiting interracial marriages.
Mary Poppins Returns is set to premiere in theaters on December 25th 2018.
