It was announced on Thursday that David Wright would be undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck. This doesn’t come as a big surprise after everything else Wright tried to do wasn’t working, and he was really left with no choice. The Mets said they won’t know the timetable until the surgery is done but most likely Wright will be out for the year. Anthony DiComo of MLB dot com said that he “Spoke to surgeons who estimated a 3-6 month recovery for this type of surgery. Returning this season seems highly unlikely for Wright.” And Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard tweeted Thursday morning, “Rough day hearing D Wright is out for the year. His presence and leadership
His presence and leadership is irreplaceable.” So while not official, Syndergaard clearly feels Wright will be out for the year.
For Wright, this is the second straight year he has to deal with a major injury. Last year it was spinal stenosis that took him out for four months. But even dealing with that injury, he was back for the stretch run during the end of the regular season and was there for the postseason. This year it looks like he won’t get that chance. And for a guy who was extremely loyal to the Mets organization, this has to be difficult. He has been a Met his entire career, debuting in 2004. And really up until last year the team only had one good season, three if you want to include 2007 and 2008 even though they ended in collapses. In 2013 he signed an eight-year $138 million contract with the Mets. He easily could have signed elsewhere, but he stayed loyal to the organization and trusted them that they would turn it around. And they have. In 2015 making it to the World Series and seem to be set up to be good for the future.
But for Wright, he hasn’t had much of a chance to enjoy it. He is dealing with back to back seasons with a major injury. The Mets finally got good again, and Wright’s body is failing him. First spinal stenosis, now a major neck surgery. And if you want to look ahead, right now it is very difficult to see Wright playing through his current contract that runs through 2020. It’s tough not to think that the end is near. But for now, you just wish him the best of luck in his recovery.
