20th Century Fox is reportedly eying David Leitch, the director of action film John Wick, to be the new director for Deadpool 2. Tim Miller was set to be the original sequel film’s director, but allegedly dropped out of the project due to creative differences with the lead actor Ryan Reynolds.
The deal for David Leitch to formally join the Deadpool sequel has yet to be signed and other candidates could still be in the race to obtain the director seat.
Leitch was reportedly eyed by 20th Century Fox to direct its fellow Marvel longtime adapted movie project X-Force, although due to the fallout of Miller, the studio is strongly considering Leitch as their replacement. Leith is also known for directing The Coldest City, which starred Charlize Theron.
Tim Miller was reportedly not formally signed on to be Deadpool 2’s director. Although Miller was a part of the new film through its script development and was expected to want to return to the hit superhero franchise.
Fox announced this April at CinemaCon that their lead actor Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller would be a part of the Deadpool sequel film. Stacey Snider, Fox’s Film chief, also confirmed at CinemaCon that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick would return as screenplay writers for the new sequel film.
Fox gained one of its biggest box office hits in 2016 after Deadpool earned over 782.6 million dollars worldwide. Deadpool overthrew The Matrix Reloaded, which was the previous highest grossing rated R movie in the studio’s history.
Fox has yet to announce which stars from the original Deadpool will be returning to the sequel film aside from Reynolds. Reportedly, ten actresses are currently auditioning for the female lead Domino character that is set to appear in Deadpool 2 and the upcoming X-Force film. The actresses include Lizzy Caplan, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sienna Miller, Kelly Rohrbach, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Stephanie Sigman, Eve Hewson, Sofia Boutella, and Ruby Rose.
Fox has yet to announce the theatrical release date for Deadpool 2.
