If you ever liked the WWE, then you must have liked the WWE Divas. Sadly, even in the WWE, female wrestlers don’t get the same respect and attention as male wrestlers that they deserve.
However, in the Netflix series GLOW (aka Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling), females are always the main event and it’s a very refreshing show.
It’s set in everyone’s favorite time period the 1980s and the concept is based off an actual syndicated professional wrestling TV series called GLOW from the same decade.
Though, everything else about the Netflix show such as the characters and plot twists are fictional. Not a true story, the show still delves into deep concept issues such as race, abortion, marriage, equality, and of course fame.
The women of GLOW just want to be stars but it’s more difficult simply because they’re all women or because some of them aren’t White.
I know right now this show sounds deep (which it is) but it’s also a really fun show. In fact, it’s known to be a comedy. Although, I prefer to call it a dramedy. It’s finding laughter in the sorrow.
Also, since the show is Netflix and not cable, it isn’t restricted to a specific time range. Usually, comedies are like just over 20 minutes. However, some episodes of GLOW can be over 30 minutes and you’ll love each minute, wishing there was more to watch.
Thankfully, the second season (composed of ten episodes like the first season) premieres this Friday.
The first season has an average rating of 7.58 on Rotten Tomatoes and 95 percent of its reviews are positive. So far the second season doesn’t have a single negative review on Rotten Tomatoes.
Also, don’t be surprised when the first season of GLOW gets nominated for the Emmys this year. It will probably get nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Alison Brie, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Betty Gilpin and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Marc Maron.
It’s only around five hours, ten hours if you include season two. You won’t regret it and with each laugh and heartache, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t start watching this show sooner.
