While the project has met fierce resistance from people worried that it will impact ridership on public transportation, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Agency, known as LA Metro, is apparently on board. Metro is a state-owned agency that operates public transportation such as light rail and buses for Los Angeles County.
The transportation agency issued a statement on Twitter about its plans to cooperate with the Boring Company two weeks ago:
Metro leadership and CEO Phil Washington had a great meeting today with the talented staff of the @boring_company. They will coordinate with us as they move ahead with their proof of concept tunnel under Sepulveda Boulevard to ensure it doesn’t interfere with our Sepulveda Transit Corridor rail project. We’ll be partners moving forward.
Now, however, Elon Musk retweeted it, adding that he is “excited” for his tunneling company to partner with the transit agency.
Metro was previously concerned about the Boring Company’s plans for a tunnel in western Los Angeles, potentially obstructing their plans for a local rail system. There’s currently no detail on the nature of the partnership.
