People all over the world are constantly debating over women’s rights. While some nations have more progressive views, others struggle in that area. A case involving one woman from Iran has people looking at how that nation in particular is treating its women. According to BBC News, a young woman in Iran may be at risk for being hung in the next few days. The news has human rights activist all over the world looking into this issue.
BBC News is reporting that the woman in question is 22-year-old Zeinab Sekaanvand. Reports are stating that the woman was a child bride and has been convicted of killing her husband. Sekaanvand is claiming that her husband was brutally beating her for months before she killed him. Officials are stating that the young woman came from a poor family and for a chance at a better life, married her first husband at the age of 15. BBC News is also reporting that Sekaanvand reported her former husband to authorities several times, as she claims he began verbally and physically abusing her shortly after they married. Sekaanvand was also denied in her requests from a divorce from him and disowned by her family for eloping with him in the first place. She was seventeen years old when his death took place.
Sekaanvand has been imprisoned for quite some time now, and her execution was delayed due to her pregnancy. BBC News also reports that the young woman remarried and conceived a child while imprisoned. Because of this, authorities postponed her execution. Unfortunately, the young woman lost her child. Reports are also stating that Sekaanvand gave birth to a stillborn after suffering from the shock of seeing her cellmate and close friend executed. Because she is no longer pregnant, Sekaanvand is once again at risk to be put to death in the very near future.
Iran has been causing much controversy for its death penalty, conviction of minors, and its treatment of women in the nation. Not only does this case have people worried about Sekaanvand, but it also has many people fearful for other women in circumstances like hers. As the story continues, many people will be watching Iran and its treatment of its young women and children.
