Women all over the world have been struggling to have the same rights that men do. These women often look to well-spoken leaders to voice the concerns about equality all women have. But does this limit the other career options these leaders have? BBC News is reporting that notable feminist writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is selling cosmetics. This has many people questioning how this will affect her credibility as an author and activist.
The news of Adichie’s latest venture came to be public knowledge on Friday night. BBC News is reporting that the author has just been announced the face of a makeup brand called No7. The Nigerian author is very well known for her award-winning works such as Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Americanah, as well as her feature on Beyonce’s song Flawless. The venture into the makeup world is a new and somewhat surprising venture for the author.
Adichie is very aware of the stir the announcement has caused and has already released statements that address some of the surprise and concern some of her supporters might have. BBC News is also reporting that the author spoke with TedTalk and has stated that her position as a feminist does not limit her ability and right to indulge in her love of things that are conventionally set aside for her gender. This includes makeup. BBC News has also released the following statement that the author gave during her interview.
“Sadly, women have learnt to be ashamed and apologetic about pursuits that are seen as traditionally female, such as fashion and makeup.”
Adichie and her writings have influenced thousands of people across the globe and have sparked much conversation surrounding the rights of women everywhere. The authors newest venture does not change what she has been able to do in other avenues of her life. Hopefully, the public can see this and will continue to support her in the future.
