It’s Friday night. You’re out hunting with your friends for bighorn sheep, getting a little sleepy in the wilderness. You lay down to take a nap and wake up inside a bear. Sound familiar? No? For Stephen Vouch, 29, this incident became very familiar on Friday, October 2 because that is exactly what happened!
“He got a hold of my head, and that’s what woke me up,” Mr. Vouch stated.”That’s when I kind of freaked out. That’s when I could hear the bear breathing.” “Kind of freaked out” must be an understatement or the Boise resident is just not easy to scare.
Fortunately, he was scared enough to scream when he woke up and realized he had his head inside the mouth of a bear. The scream startled the bear, which made it jump and hit the tarp right above the area where the hunters were sleeping.
And as if this wasn’t enough good karma, one of the hunter’s .45-caliber handgun accidentally went off and wounded the huge animal whereupon Vouch grabbed his chance to shoot and kill the bear.
The injuries Mr. Vouch suffered weren’t severe and the hunters were prepared with medical supplies. Number one finger rule of hunting: You’ve got to prepare for a bear to eat you while you’re asleep. Of course, there was no cell phone service in the wilderness, which resulted in Stephen not getting to a doctor until three days post the attack.
