It’s been a while since ex-Vice President Joe Biden has made a public appearance. However, his most recent appearance shows that his spirit for change and innovation remains as strong as ever.

Biden has started a new initiative, “As You Are,” which focuses on promoting community acceptance for LGBTQ youth.

The campaign focuses on giving a voice to LGBTQ youth, parents, family members, and educators. He hopes that their stories will inspire others to accept LGBTQ people in their community.

In Biden’s words, he created the program “with the hope that [it will] serve to inspire, to create communities, to heal families, and to change the broader culture to ensure a bright future for all LGBTQ young people.”

The ex-vice president further stated:

“I’m so proud to announce the Biden Foundation has launched this campaign. We’ll use our resources to highlight the harms of family rejection — and lift up research, best practices, and personal stories to powerfully show the significant value of family acceptance. LGBTQ young people should never have to face rejection from those who love them. “
Via social media, Biden asked young people to share stories “about the importance of family acceptance, because we all deserve to be safe, loved, and affirmed.” He also attempted to highlight the amount of homelessness and suicide within the LGBTQ community, using information backed by a study by the medical journal JAMA.
Biden’s latest actions should come as no surprise to the public, as he has constantly supported marriage equality and was very outspoken about it before it was legalized. Biden most likely influenced Barack Obama’s support for the cause, as Obama previously stated that his views were “evolving.” After Biden publicly announced his support, Obama joined his efforts.
Joe Biden is a perfect example of the comfort brought about by having an LGBTQ ally in the White House, and it’s a feeling that is sadly missing in the current administration.
