Many people associate legendary singer and songwriter John Lennon for being married to Yoko Ono; a marriage that was so controversial amongst fans and the band that many people believed caused the breakup of the band.

But before Ono, Lennon was married to Cynthia Lennon, who has just passed away at the age of 75.

Cynthia and John’s only son, Julian, who has also gone on to become a musician himself, issued an official statement read by his representative. The statement reads,

“Cynthia Lennon passed away today at her home in Mallorca, Spain, following a short but brave battle with cancer. Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time.”

Last year Julian commented on how he and Cynthia lived separate lives as he grew up having a father who was in the Beatles.

In an interview with Fox411 he stated,

“Anyone must remember that dad left when I was 3 years old. Mom and I lived out of the limelight. We lived a totally different life.”

Cynthia Powell and John Lennon met back in the ‘60s at art school, and went on to get married. She once told the British Independent Newspaper,

“I didn’t marry a Beatle. I married a broke student who played the guitar and ponced all my grant money off me.”

Even though she divorced John she once told Good Morning America,

“You couldn’t resist being around him. You couldn’t resist watching what he was up to. I mean, he was a total rebel. Everybody was amazed by him.”
