The New York Knicks have found their new point guard. On Wednesday they acquired Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls. The full trade is the Knicks getting Rose, Justin Holiday, and 2017 second round pick and the Bulls getting Jose Calderon, Jerian Grant, and Robin Lopez. Overall, it seems like a fair deal for both teams. The biggest piece the Knicks gave up was Grant, and the Bulls knew they probably wouldn’t get a lot of significant things back for Rose.
As mentioned in an article earlier this week when the Knicks were talking about acquiring Rose, he is a nice addition to the team. When you looked at the team as the were, they needed to add a point guard, and Rose obviously fits that. With the addition of Rose, it gives them a nice big three of Rose, Carmelo Anthony, and Kristaps Porzingis. Now, the Knicks won’t be winning any championships anytime soon, but they should be able to compete for a playoff spot. Anthony is still a very reliable player and Porzingis showed a lot of promise during his rookie season. Bringing Rose in will only help.
The Knicks still need to do more though, because both Derrick Williams and Aaron Afflalo opted out of their deals and now will be free agents. After today’s deal, it led to some questions on what the Knicks will do next. The two popular names that people brought up were Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol. Gasol definitely has a connection with Phil Jackson who played for in Los Angeles. But Howard is the more intriguing name. Because there’s no doubt Howard is probably the better play, it’s just his attitude that rubs people the wrong way. But if he can straighten that out, a team or Howard, Anthony, Porzingis, and Rose isn’t that bad. And it would be interesting to watch Howard and Porzingis work together. The Rose trade was a nice first step, but the Knicks still need to make more moves.
