L Joevon; What Sowed the Seeds of a Legend?

On a cloudy June afternoon, L Joevon is taking a walk in a park near his Brooklyn home, letting his mind run wild with creativity. People pass by barely noticing him, completely oblivious to his thoughts, which tower higher than any New York City skyscraper. L Joevon is an artist paving the way for a new way to reach fans. His Seeds in the Concrete project is unlike anything previously done before. He has combined music, video, and literature into a cutting edge hip-hop project that will attract a wider range of fans than ever before. If you spoke with L’s friends, they would say that they never envisioned him capable of something like this from him 10 years ago. L had to endure many hardships to reach a point where he had enough strength to break free from a self-destructive lifestyle. Now, L wants to share his story with you.

After L’s father abandoned the family, L was raised by his mother until the age of 7. She was unfortunately under the influence of drugs which caused her to abandon L, leading him to live in a foster home. Once there, he was subject to terrible abuse. Nobody would listen to his cries for help as he was continuously beaten and starved. “This was nothing out of the ordinary in the 90s, the authorities would often turn a blind eye toward these issues,” L said. His lack of guidance sucked him into the gang life when he was just 12 years old. Hurt and confused with the world thinking he was crazy, it felt like nothing could go worse. However, it did get worse, as he was wrongfully accused of a robbery that tore his life apart. L was never found guilty, but it was enough for him to be kicked out of school.

Without the necessary guidance, L made some bad choices that led him to the lowest point in his life. L had been involved in gang life for quite some time at this point, and for his commitment, he had risen higher in the ranks. While this was something L was very proud of at the time, it also put him in a lot of danger. L was ambushed by gang members and was shot twice in the chest, left to die bleeding in the street. He was rushed to a hospital and received emergency care. L was only there for about three hours before the gangs came to the hospital to try and finish the job. “I was still bleeding and in pain. Next thing I know is that someone is coming to visit me, but there was no way that anyone knew I was there. I knew I was in trouble. I had to get out of there.” Somehow he did. He was able to escape the hospital with his life but scared more now than ever.

The first thing L did was get a gun to protect himself. He thought that the risk was worth the protection. This was a bad mistake. L was charged with possessing a weapon without a license  and was sent to prison.

The correctional facility did little to reform. Once L was released from prison it was impossible to find a good job so he made his money by dealing drugs. In 2011 L was pulled over for failing to signal a turn. He fled the scene after they found drugs in his car. L was chased and eventually brought down by police dogs. He was charged with felony and misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance, and a misdemeanor injuring a police animal, resisting arrest, false personation, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle while he was still on parole for his felony weapons conviction. L was sentenced to 3 years in maximum security prison.

It was only then that L realized that a serious change had to happen. He found that our actions are the results of our thoughts. If he wanted to change the way he was acting, then thought would have to change first. L started censoring what he read, listened and saw for the rest of his sentence. He started reading George Clayton and marketing strategies, focusing on positivity, and a way to break free from the circumstances. L would lay awake at night thinking of his vision for a book, album, and videos that would show his struggle and inspire others to be successful. While still in prison, he finished his book and wrote the album. Once he was released he called up his close friends and told them his plan. “I wanted to share this empowerment with others and let them know if you change your perception you can change your reality, and through that, you set yourself up to see your visions come true.”

Seeds in the Concrete started from nothing but an idea. The idea that anybody can grow into something beautiful no matter the circumstances. L had to give his parole officer a fake address because he was living in an abandoned warehouse on the east side. What was really impressive was that nobody realized this. L would go to work every day looking very presentable and ready for business. He poured more than his heart and soul into Seeds in the Concrete. While this was going on, L would attend a competitive entrepreneurship program that was so excited and intrigued about his business idea that they supported L financially. He used this money to put together a team of experts that would help him create and promote his product in a whole new way.

L started creating the project with the album. He already had a head start writing the lyrics while in prison. He spent over 60 hours in the studio recording and mixing until he was satisfied with the results of his 12 new songs. Mastering of these songs is still in progress.

The next part of the project was the book. This is the centerpiece of L’s vision and the core of his creativity. L wrote a majority of the novel while in prison. Once finished, the next hurdle for L was to find an editor that could be trusted. L wanted an editor that understood where he was coming from and the style of writing that could be seen as grammatically incorrect. “I wrote in this style so people would understand the circumstances to where I’m from”.

After 2 years of preparation, Seeds in the Concrete is in full stride. The website SeedsintheConcrete.com is up and running. Pre-orders for the book are available, and 3 of the songs are available to listen to for free. “I’m scared to fail,” L says. “But this fear is good because I’m using it as a sign to become my best self.” His story of coming from nothing to achieve success is one of true resilience. He hopes to find others, like him, that are stuck in the concrete. And L hopes that with his help, we can all grow into something beautiful.
