Legendary Pictures has officially commissioned new writers for upcoming Godzilla sequel.

The studio has set Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to write the next installment of the Godzilla franchise. Dougherty and Shield are known for writing the screenplay for Legendary Pictures Krampus. Alex Garcia is set to oversee the developing project for Legendary Pictures.

The studio plans to expand their Godzilla film franchise and their King Kong franchise in the near future. To ensure these two film franchises, Legendary plants to acquire the distribution rights from Warner Bros. King Kong: Skull Island.

The film was originally going to be developed and produced under the Universal Pictures label, but Legendary was adamant into revamping the King Kong universe. The studio is also reportedly preparing a writer’s room to help create new ideas and or storylines for their new films. The biggest project for the studio’s writers room is developing the storyline for the new Godzilla Vs. King Kong film.

Legendary and Warner Bros. announced their plans to create the future Godzilla and King Kong films last October 2015. The first joint film project King Kong: Skull Island is expected to premiere in theaters this coming March 2017.

Legendary still currently holds a distribution deal with Universal for the two action franchises. Although Legendary decided to send the overall King Kong rights back to Warner Bros. in the beginning of the development process to ensure a new “ecosystem” of giant super-species or monsters.

Allegedly Dougherty and Zach Shields have yet to write the new Godzilla screenplay because of the storyline is still being debated in the studio’s writer’s room.

Dougherty has previously worked with Legendary Pictures on Trick ‘r Treat, which was written and directed by the new Godzilla writer. Dougherty co-wrote the Krampus script with Zach Shields, which Dougherty also acted as the film’s director.

Godzilla 2 is currently set to premiere in theaters on March 22, 2019. The Godzilla vs. Kong film has a premiere date set for May 29th 2020, if there are no production or filming delays.
