James Mangold, director and writer of Oscar nominated 2017 super hero film Logan will be directing a Star Wars movie starring the iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett.
With Solo: A Star Wars Story opening this Friday, the Boba Fett movie would be the second standalone film to be centered around a classic Star Wars character. There is also much speculation about a potential film about Jedi master Obi Wan Kenobi.
It is also not clear whether Simon Kinberg (a writer and producer heavily involved in the X-Men franchise) who was rumored to be working on a Boba Fett movie is still involved in the project.
Another uncertainty is when will the film be released. Lucasfilm has yet to reveal the release schedule for the multiple Star Wars films that it has planned after 2019’s untitled Episode 9 movie (the conclusion of the trilogy that began with The Force Awakens).
The first film after the newest trilogy could be the rumored Obi Wan film. It could also be a film in one of the two new film series that have been announced. There is a film series headed by Rian Johnson who wrote and directed The Last Jedi. The second movie series will be led by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners behind the massive HBO hit and Emmy winning show Game of Thrones.
The final season of Game of Thrones doesn’t premiere until next year, so it’s very doubtful that its showrunners will have a Star Wars movie come out a year later. But with the Force nearly anything is possible.
Boba Fett is one of the Star Wars franchise many beloved villains. He’s the Darth Vader to Han’s Luke except Boba Fett isn’t Han’s father. Boba Fett played a crucial role in The Empire Strikes Back and later was eaten by the Sarlacc Pit during The Return of the Jedi. A younger version of the character also appeared during the Star Wars prequels and there are many rumors that he will appear in the new Solo movie.
After all these years, the bounty hunter is making his return to a galaxy far, far away.
