United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch faced tough questions and concerns from House Republicans on Tuesday over her private meeting with former president Bill Clinton which took place only a few days before the FBI concluded that no charges would come upon Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server.
Lynch remarked in her testimony before the House Judiciary Committee that the encounter between the former president and herself was about golf and grandchildren, and that there was no discussion of Hillary Clinton’s email practices or any other official business. But the timing of the meeting stirred a flat out mess and Clinton’s trust ratings declined after the meeting took place. After the FBI decided that Clinton would not face charges, an ABC poll reflected that a majority of registered voters thought that she should have been tried for concealing classified emails. House Representative of South Carolina, Trey Gowdy, grilled FBI director James Comey on the double standard in the criminal justice system last week.
Conspiracy Theorists may point to the Clinton trial being overshadowed by the police shootings in Minnesota, Baton Rouge and Dallas. On top of that, they may argue that President Obama’s speech in Dallas on Tuesday may also be a cover up to Loretta Lynch’s hearing. Obama stressed his case for gun control as Lynch did during the hearing reiterating that the country is in a much larger predicament than as far as her hearing was concerned.
Lynch had the following to say:
“The Justice Department will continue to work with state and local law enforcement agencies to provide funding and technical support for programs like body-worn cameras and de-escalation training. Lynch also deflected many of the questions she was asked by saying Lynch said that As attorney general it would be inappropriate for me to comment on specifics of the investigation.”
Representative Bob Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican, said the fact that Clinton did not face charges “defies logic and the law.” He says he believes less-powerful government workers would not have received the same treatment. Goodlatte concluded the meeting reiterating that Lynch failed to answer most of the questions asked by the House and said she would be given the opportunity to follow a write-up.
Lynch may be off the hook but the State Department is now attempting to try Clinton for Perjury charges. The FBI’s decision to not try Clinton did not benefit her given the statements that Comey made which was that Clinton was “careless” and “withheld information” to the justice department. Lynch’s refusal to explain Clinton’s prosecution is scratching more heads and the fact she has close ties to the president who is campaigning for Clinton is another red flag.
