A man in Roswell, New Mexico believed he won over half a million dollars in the lottery, little did he know that the state of New Mexico was going to refuse to pay him.
John Wines, 65, is a retired heating and air conditioning repairman, bought a “Rubys 7” lottery scratch off for 20 dollars, he went to his car to scratch off the numbers where he revealed two 250,000 dollar prizes, as well as one 50 dollar and 75 dollar reward. After all the numbers were scratched Wines believed he had won a total of 500,625 dollars, an amount that would change his life forever.
Wines then proceeded to run into the convenience store where he bought the ticket, as excited as any man who won that much money would be, and he asked the lady behind the counter to scan the ticket.
The lady scanned the ticket and told Wines that the ticket was not a winner. After further investigation the ticket turned out to have two misprints, the winning numbers of 1 and 2 that needed to appear above the winning amounts was really supposed to be read as 12, and 18 according to the bar code numbers provided on the ticket. Wines, was heartbroken and exclaimed, “I didn’t misprint it. I bought the ticket in the good faith that if I won, they would pay me.”
The New Mexico Lottery Association denied to pay the amount that Wines expected because on the back of every ticket, it exclaims that they are not liable for any void, altered or misprinted tickets. They did offer Wines $100 in lottery tickets as a form of compensation, let us hope that Wines wins a little bit of money from those tickets, but many of us are skeptical to believe that he will win anything near that amount.
