- Matt McGorry Has a Message for OITNB Haters

Matt McGorry, one of the stars from the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black, has been receiving a lot of flack from fans of the show. Fans are so angry at his character, John Bennett, so much so that they are hating on him on all of his social media accounts. It seems to have slipped everyone’s minds that Matt McGorry, in fact, is not John Bennett, but merely acts his character out for the show.

Spoiler alert if you have not finished binge watching the third season of OITNB!

We finally got to see a little bit more of John’s past this season. While overseas, we found him dancing with his fellow soldiers and eating ice cream sandwiches, which was all great. However, when the moment came for John to step up and save everyone from a loose grenade, he ran. Back to the present time in the show, we witness John skipping out on Daya after proposing to her and committing himself to her and the baby. Needless to say, this sparked rage amongst fans and they have been taking it out on the actor.

After posting a picture to Instagram, angry, hate-filled responses filled the comment section from angry fans. “I hate this dead beat ass dad I can’t believe he already replaced day smh not happy Father’s Day to you piece of s—t!” and “How you gon have sex with daya, propose, tell her you love her, tell her everything will be okay, AND THEN LEAVE! I thought you were a good man but we all thought wrong!” were just two of many strange comments left on the actor’s post.

Although many of the comments were made in good fun, McGorry wasn’t too thrilled about them and posted this response:

Happy Fathers Day to all the real fathers out there! I am an actor and I play the fictional character John Bennett on the fictional television show entitled Orange Is The New Black. Here I am with actresses Dascha Polanco and Elizabeth Rodriguez who play make-believe mother-daughter characters named Dayanara and Aleida Diaz on the made up television program with me. They are not mother and Daugther in real life even though they and we play pretend characters that are sometimes even the opposite of who we are as real live people while not reflecting our real lives because it is not real. Moments before this photograph was taken I was even saying words that were written by another person, all the while pretending that my name was John Bennett and that his thoughts and actions were a result of my own brain! Weirdly, the words coming out of my mouth and the things I did in the story were not created by me at all! To make matters even more confusing, I am even dressed in fictional character John Bennett’s costume (a costume is like fictional clothes) in this photograph that was taken on the television set and afterwards I went home to my apartment in New York City where I don’t have a child because I’m not a father and have never worked in a prison and TV is not real life. #oitnb
