When the Mercedes AMG GT-S first launched it had car enthusiasts drooling. Finally, Mercedes had answered everyone’s prayers and is offering a true drivers coupe. However, the starting price tag of $130,000 USD meant the car was fairly unattainable to most. Now, due to the introduction of a new “entry level” model, you can acquire one for $20,000 less.
The new Mercedes AMG GT loses a bit of power, and takes a hit on some interior amenities but is essentially still the same car we know and love for significantly less. While still using the same 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 as the GT-S, it takes a loss of 48-hp and 36-lb-ft of torque due to detuning. While not the most sizeable loss in performance, it is still enough that it’s worth noting.
Most of the cost-cutting can be seen when one steps inside the GT’s cabin. The car loses its leather seats and exchanges them for vinyl. It also ditches the adaptive exhaust,Burmester audio system, adaptive suspension, and red brake calipers. Some of the previously mentioned can be added back on as options, but at additional cost.
Once all is said and done, you now have a car that starts at the “low” price of $112,125 USD. While this price may seem astronomical to most, it truly is a bargain when talking about gaining entry to Mercedes’ top of the line sports car platform.
While the car does appeal to many as a status symbol, enthusiasts are not so excited. If the car will be used as a commuter, it may be hard coming to grips with vinyl making an appearance in a car that’s north of $100,000 USD. If one plans to track it, they’ll probably want that extra 48-hp that was taken. If the plan is to heavily modify the car, this is the perfect trim level. The Mercedes AMG GT is expected to go on sale late this summer.
