Molly Ringwald is reportedly joining The CW’s new eighties inspired show Riverdale. The Breakfast Club star is expected to guest star on the new series as the main character’s mother named Mary Andrews.
Ringwald’s character supposedly left Riverdale a few years ago to follow her dreams. Although she returns to her hometown to help her family in a time of need. Her character reconnects with her son Archie and husband Fred (Luke Perry), but also her former high school friends.
Riverdale is produced from Warner Bros and Berlanti Productions. Greg Berlanti is not only the executive producer for Riverdale, but also for Supergirl and the Flash.
The new show is based on the Archie Comics characters and is set in the present day. Riverdale will have a new subversive take on the comic characters and explore the town’s hidden secrets.
Other executive producers include Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The penned pilot was directed by Lee Toland Krieger.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is also the Archie Comic’s chief creative officer. The CW has reportedly set the series to air with the comic’s 75th anniversary.
Originally Riverdale was developed at Fox around 2014 and even had an alleged script deal. Although for unknown reasons, Fox didn’t go forward with the project.
The Riverdale project then began development again in The CW in 2015. The pilot allegedly began filming around March 14th 2016 and ended on April 1st. The extra twelve episodes for the first season began filming last September in Vancouver, Canada.
Riverdale is set to star K.J. Apa as Archie, Camila Mendes as Veronica, and Lili Reinhart as Betty. Other stars include Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, and Ashleigh Murray.
Molly Ringwald is set to appear on episode 10 and 11 of Riverdale. The actress’s other recent credits include a guest appearance on Bravo’s Odd Mom Out. She is also known for her longtime motherly role on The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
