At today’s NAIAS 2016 opening press conferences, over 50 of the leading automotive journalists in North America shared the results of their deliberations on the Car of the Year, and the Truck/Utility Vehicle of the Year. The votes were tallied and standing on top of the mountain were: the Honda Civic for Car of the Year, and the Volvo XC90 for Truck/Utility of the Year. This is not the first time these vehicles have taken home these awards, as the Civic also won Car of the Year in 2006, and the XC90 won Utility of the Year in 2003.
The competition was fierce in the finals for Car of the Year; The Civic won with 203 points, followed closely by the Chevrolet Malibu in second with 181 points, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata took third with 146 points. The finals for the Truck/Utility of the Year were not nearly as competitive; The XC90 was far and away the favorite, garnering a staggering 310 points, with the Honda pilot scoring 111 points for second place, and the Nissan Titan XD trailing with 109 points. Points were quantified based on a series of criteria, including: safety, value, innovation, comfort, design, handling and driver satisfaction.
This year’s awards marked the 23rd annual celebration for the North American International Auto Show. The lineage of previous winners are a who’s who of industry giants, last year’s winners were: the Volkswagen Golf for Car of the Year, and the Ford F-150 for Truck of the Year. A hallowed hall indeed.
