On Saturday morning, April 11, Nelly’s bus was pulled over by a Putnum County officer. The officer pulled over the bus because it was missing the U.S. Department of Transportation sticker and International Fuel Tax Association sticker. After the officer had pulled the bus over he smelled marijuana on the bus and conducted a search. In the search the officer found methamphetamines, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Nelly, real name Cornell Haynes, was arrested for felony possession of drugs, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Along with the drugs found on the bus the police officer found three guns on the bus. According to Rolling Stone the guns on board were “a gold-plated .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol, a .45-caliber Tarus pistol and a 500-magnum Smith and Wesson.” One of Nelly’s companions, Brian Jones, was also arrested for being in possession of a handgun while being a felon. The two men were taken to Putnum County Jail and the other men on the bus were not charged with anything.
Since there were so many people on the bus it is unclear who the drugs actually belonged to. They could of well belonged to the rapper, but it is uncertain. It came out that there were ziplock bags containing MDMA, or commonly known as Molly or Ecstasy. Nelly’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, released a statement saying “We are extremely confident that when the facts come out, Nelly will not be associated with the contraband that was allegedly discovered.”
Nelly’s bail was set to $10,000 and he was released. Nelly’s court date will be June 19. It is unclear what Jones’ bail is or when his court date will be.
This isn’t Nelly’s first drug charge. In Texas of 2012, Nelly was discovered to have 10 pounds of marijuana, .64 ounces of heroin, and a loaded .45-caliber pistol. However, Nelly was not charged because Jones admitted to being the owner of the drugs and the gun.
