This past Monday Comedy Central named South African Trevor Noah as the replacement host of “The Daily Show.” However, after this announcement, many people went to look up more about Noah and came across his Twitter account. There people found some tweets that were controversial. Noah had posted some tweets where he made jabs at women, Jewish people, Israel, and even America. Since more people are looking towards Noah, there are more people to scrutinize his jokes on Twitter.
Noah is a stand up comedian and it is not uncommon for them to post things that can seem insensitive. Some comedians make a living by poking fun at stereotypes in their stand up routines. However, these tweets have given people pause as to any type of excitement for Noah’s new gig on “The Daily Show.”
According to the report from the New York Times, Comedy Central has responded to the scrutiny towards Noah:
“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
Noah has also responded to all the scrutiny on his Twitter account. He tweeted that
“To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.” Twitter is a perfect place for comedians to try out new jokes that they may incorporate in their upcoming routines. So when a a joke doesn’t work it stays online. Also, a lot of the tweets people are referring to are at least a year old.
Noah has most likely evolved from those jokes in his routine. Along with the talented team of “The Daily Show,” he will keep the show going. Noah has even been a contributor to the program three times with Jon Stewart, so Noah is not entirely new to how the show works. He also had his own show in South Africa called “Tonight with Trevor Noah,” so Noah is no stranger to late night television. Most importantly, Jon Stewart has given his blessing as Noah being the new host. If Jon Stewart, the man who made “The Daily Show” what it is today, has faith in Noah, so should everyone else.
