The hit song that premiered #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, “This is America” by Childish Gambino is now platinum.

For a song to be certified platinum means that the song has earned one million equivalent song units. One song unit is equal to one digital download sale in the U.S. and one digital download sale is also equivalent to 150 on-demand audio and/or video song streams, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

This shouldn’t be that shocking as song was able to premiere #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, toppling artist Drake’s “Nice for What” which also premiered #1 on the charts. Though after two weeks, “This is America” has dropped to #2 with “Nice for What” retaking the number one spot.

Most of this song’s popularity comes from its music video. A video that has been examined by multiple critics and fans for its references to Jim Crow, gun violence and control in America and the role of Black entertainment in society.

People can enjoy art from Black voices but still choose to ignore the issues that Black people deal with in this country. This is America. It’s a complex video that helped pushed Childish Gambino’s song to be heard over and over again by many people.

The song “This is America” has been streamed over 147 million times while the music video has over 216 million streams, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“This is America” is performed by Childish Gambino also known as Donald Glover. It’s easily been a phenomenal year for Glover. He’s been a significant part of the critically acclaimed FX network TV show Atlanta with 99% of its reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for its second season are positive.

Glover also played the Star Wars character Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. His performance as the character has been highly praised. The success of “This is America” is now another achievement for the multi-talented Glover.
