”The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it,” U.S. President Barack Obama said on Sunday, December 6, in his most passionate speech on terrorism yet. Note that he says ISIL and not ISIS, not wanting to put emphasis on Syria.
The latest terrorist attack in the United States happened last week, when a couple opened fire at an event in California. It has come to light that the couple was radicalized by ISIS and acted in their favor.
“This was an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people. Here’s what you need to know […] We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us,” President Obama said, reassuring the nation, that the battle against terrorism is on the top of the list.
“We will prevail by being strong and smart, resilient and relentless,” Barack Obama said. The President called on Congress to take action and outlaw all people on any “no fly list” in connection with terrorism.
To prevent terror from happening in the United States, the President furthermore demanded more focus on gun control, claiming this was a part of fighting ISIS. It is too easy to buy guns and cause harm to other in America, Obama said.
“Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semiautomatic weapon?” the President asked, “This is a matter of national security.”
The couple who killed 14 people in San Bernadino last week was using very powerful weapons, which were legally purchased. The couple was not on any no fly lists or in the spotlight of national security.
“What we can do, and must do, is make it harder for them to kill, “ President Barack Obama said.
