The first trailer for Baywatch was released this early Thursday morning. The action-comedy flick is set to star Dwayne Johnson and Zach Efron.
The trailer starts with Johnson’s voiceover commenting about his team being the elite of the elite. He comments that they are “the heart and soul of this beach” and they “protect what others don’t want to protect.”
Dwayne Johnson is shown swimming in the vast ocean to save a burning ship, claiming the team goes above and beyond.
Then Zach Efron’s character adds comical commentary about redeeming the Baywatch brand. Efron and Johnson seem to butt heads at first, but ultimately team up to save the beach.
Variety reporters, who viewed early footage of the film at CinemaCon this April, stated that it is a lot like the revamped version of 21 Jump Street. They commented that the new Baywatch team isn’t afraid to make fun of its source material.
The original television show that the new film is based off of ran for 11 seasons. The film is also directed by Seth Gordon.
Filming for the movie reportedly began on February 22, 2016 in Savannah, GA and Miami, FL. Baywatch was produced by Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock, Beau Flynn, and Dwayne Johnson.
Paramount Picture’s originally scheduled Baywatch’s theatrical release date on May 19th, 2017. Although late this year, the studio decided to push the release date back one more week on May 26th 2017.
Allegedly Paramount wanted Baywatch to avoid competition with their other popular film project Alien: Covenant. Alien: Covenant is a sequel to 2012’s Prometheus and stars Michael Fassbender. Covenant is set to commission Ridley Scott as the film’s director and producer.
Baywatch will also star Alexandria Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass, David Hasselhoff, and Pamela Anderson. The film will feature Johnson and Daddario together for a second time since 2015’s San Andreas.
