As the games have started in Rio over a week ago, the Olympic Games Organising Committee and World Animal Protection have started to take stray cats and other homeless animals into safety. These animals who lived in and around the stadium needed to be kept somewhere in order to give them a safe haven and also continue the games without any cat-related problems. Most rescued cats were badly hurt and very weak. They finally have rescuers giving them a better life.
“We are working restlessly to keep the animals safe during the Games, but our main hope is that they can each find a caring and responsible family,” said Rosangela Ribeiro, Veterinary Programmes Manager at World Animal Protection.
Most of the animals rescued were abandoned by their owners. Most people do not want cats once they are grown up or have kittens. They are needlessly thrown away at the stadium where an influx of people would arrive and in the process hurt many of the animals. These animals are dependent upon humans to take care of them when they don’t have the right habitat. Helping these animals will allow them to thrive in a better way. Another problem is the breeding of these animals that happens in a group of five or four and increases the number of animals living in the region a lot. Most of the animals rescued have been neutered and taken care of and will be up for adoption soon.
In order to ensure that this does not happen again with these animals, awareness of responsible pet ownership in communities in Rio.
