Bugatti’s CEO, Wolfgang Durheimer, has hinted that there may be a topless variant of their new hypercar, the Bugatti Chiron. With the Chiron’s predecessor, the Veyron, being offered in a convertible variant, it seems that a Chiron roadster would be very likely.
The current standard Chiron does not have an official price yet and is expected to be delivered to the first customers this fall. The engineers at Bugatti were originally shooting for 1500 horsepower with the Chiron’s 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder engine. However recently Bugatti has had to reassess their goals and shoot for a slightly more realistic “one-megawatt” benchmark (about 1350 horsepower). Even with the lowered goal, it’s sure to provide a sensation like no other with the top down and foot to the floor.
A topless Chiron is something the world would surely love to see and is surely something Bugatti’s wealthy customers would enjoy driving while shopping in Monaco. However, we probably will not see a convertible until the standard fixed top Chiron is further into development due to the engineering feats that will need to be overcome to take the roof off of such a powerful car and deem it as safe.
With that said, a full convertible Chiron is unlikely. The convertible variant will more than likely resemble a T-top. This is due to the design of the car incorporating an “Atlantic” line (a design element that pays homage to the 1935-1938 Atlantic Coupe) that arches over the roof-line all the way to the rear of the car, and over the engine bay.
According to Car and Driver, “When asked whether a roadster version of the Chiron would need to have a T-bar roof in order to preserve the “Atlantic” line at the center of the coupe, Dürheimer remarked: ‘Very perceptive.’” This is likely more than enough to keep fans excited for the Chiron’s future.
