Gone are the days when a gaming console is released and nothing new comes along for nearly a decade. Multiple reports from around the gaming industry suggest that Sony plans to unveil their upgraded PS4 next month, on September 7th. These same reports also state that the company not only plans to show off the console but will also be performing a technical showcase to allow gamers to see what the upgraded hardware can really do.
Gamers who have been waiting for more information on the 4K capable PS4 now have a date to mark on their calendars after the company decided not to even mention it at E3 2016. While on the other end of the spectrum, competitor Microsoft showcased the new Xbox One S, which can purchase now, and announced a third console currently only referred to as Project Scorpio.
What we know about the upgraded PS4 as of now isn’t much. We know that the console will be able to handle some 4K capabilities. Whether that is 4K gaming or only 4K video like the Xbone One S is unknown, but the console will feature some sort of UHD capabilities. Regardless of the resolution quality, if the console contains much-improved processing power and an upgraded GPU, VR from the comfort of your living room sofa is a very high possibility.
Sony has also made it abundantly clear that they will continue to sell the current PS4 (at its current price) and the upgraded version (at a premium price) alongside one another. Sony has also stated that although the console will feature upgraded hardware, it will still be able to play games that were released early in this current generation of consoles. Many took this statement as confirmation that the new version will indeed play games at a higher resolution, however, we are reluctant to subscribe to that theory.
Specific details on the new PS4’s pricing and specifications are expected to reveal at the unveiling event in New York. Access to the event is also unlikely to be public but media and press coverage can be expected. With the reveal coming in late summer, one can speculate a release date of late fall just in time for the holidays is highly likely.
