Sports Superstars and World Teams that Contracted COVID-19

The COVID-19 lockdown strict rules have deprived sports-fans of fun weekend getaways. The extended quarantine has come with devastating reports of sports iconic figures contracting the virus. Fortunately, many have pulled through and have made it out alive.

Famous Athletes Affected by COVID-19

Von Miller: The American NFL player revealed he had contracted COVID-19.

James Dolan: The 64-year-old owner of the New York Knicks tested Coronavirus positive. Dolan also owns the New York Rangers National Hockey League and is the CEO of Madison Square Garden Company.

Serhat Guler: On 25 March, Serhat Güler and coach Seyfullah Dumlupinar, a national group member from the Turkish Boxing Union, tested positive for the Coronavirus after coming back from London from an Olympic qualifier. Two other sportsmen had symptoms and are waiting for test results.

Marco Sportiello: The Italian football club goalkeeper, Atalanta, tested Coronavirus positive on 24 March.

Ottawa Senators: The first confirmed outbreak of Coronavirus in North America’s National Hockey League, an unnamed Ottawa Senators player, has proved positive. The Senators claimed the athlete had slight signs.

Marouane Fellaini: A former footballer from Manchester United who is currently playing for the Chinese Super League also tested positive. 

Sir Kenny Dalglish: The former Liverpool player and the manager had positive results for Coronavirus.

Mikel Arteta: On 12 March, Arsenal’s 37-year-old coach appeared, the first to be infected with the Coronavirus in the British football Premier League.

Callum Hudson-Odoi: On the same day, the 19-year-old Chelsea winger also said he was infected.

Paulo Dybala: An Italian player from Argentina revealed on Friday that he had been infected.

Fernando Gaviria: The Colombian cyclist reported on 12 March that after the racing event in the United Arab Emirates, he contracted the Coronavirus and was referred to a Gulf nation hospital.

Dmitry Strakhov: Strakhov was the second UAE cyclist to be identified the same day with the virus.

Dusan Vlahovic: Fiorentina Serbian striker, another Serie A club, is also infected.

Teams Affected

English Premier League: In a group in 748 players and staff, six individuals in the English Premier League clubs registered positive for COVID-19.

Deportivo Alaves: A maximum of 15 positive cases of Coronavirus, including 3 first team members and 7 training personnel, were reported by the Spanish Football Club. 

Sampdoria: Five Italian club players and the team’s doctor tested positive.

Blaise Matuidi: The midfielder for Juventus and France tested positive for Coronavirus. A notice released on 17 March by the Turin based Serie A team revealed the details. Juventus said Matuidi, the champion of the 2018 World Cup in France, was at home alone with no signs.

Daniele Rugani: Juventus player and attacker, Rugani, tested positive as well.

Paulo Dybala: Forward Footballer for Juventus and Argentina tested Coronavirus positive.

Brooklyn Nets: Four NBA players tested Coronavirus positive at the Brooklyn Nets on 17 March.

Jason Collins: On 24 March, Collins contracted the Coronavirus after hosting the Memphis Grizzlies. He spent more than 7 years on the Brooklyn Nets team from 2001 to 2014 in 13 seasons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). 

Patrick Ewing: Former NBA player has been coaching the men’s Georgetown Hoyas basketball team since 2011. He was screened for Coronavirus on 23 May and tested positive.

Rudy Gobert: The NBA Utah Jazz basketball player prompted outrage after teasingly touching the microphones and voice recorder in the media on 9 March. Three days later, he was infected.

Donovan Mitchell: Another NBA player, Utah Jazz, reported that on the same day as Gobert, he tested positive for COVID-19.

Christian Wood: The NBA team said on 15 March that Detroit Pistons forward player is “under the care of team health and self-isolation” after testing positive. 

Marcus Smart: The Boston Celtics guard tested positive as NBA COVID-19 cases increase.
