Monday afternoon in Moscow, St. Petersburg, an explosion occured in a train station, killing approximately 10 victims and injuring many others in the process. The train was traveling between the Technology Institute and Sennaya Square stations when the incident took place, according to Russia’s federal criminal investigation agency. President Vladimir Putin caught wind of this information when he was in his hometown, which just so happens to be a few miles away in St.Petersberg.
The bomb was homemade and was filled with shrapnel. It exploded in the third car of the train, right after it went into the tunnel. One victim died on the way to the hospital, and two others died on the way to the emergency room. Thirty-nine other victims were only injured, according to the health minister, Veronika Skvortsova, which he announced live on television.
They had found another bomb near Vosstaniya Square, a nearby station, however, it was luckily disarmed. Around 2:45 p.m, the subway was shut down due to the attack. The city also had announced that all transportation services will be free until further notice. They also increased security around the city as well.
“I appeal to you, citizens of St. Petersburg and guests of our city, to be alert, attentive and cautious, and to behave in a responsible manner in light of events,” said by Georgi S. Poltavchenko, the governor of St. Petersburg.
Putin, less than an hour after the explosion, went on T.V to discuss the situation. He stated that he would do everything within his power to resolve the issue. He also added the government will do everything in its power to help the families that have been affected by the ordeal.
