On Monday evening, a police captain was stabbed outside of his home in Magnanville, France, about 35 miles from Paris. The assailant then trespassed further, entering the police captain’s house, where he took the police captain’s partner and three-year-old son hostage.
The police captain and the woman, an employee of the Interior Ministry, were found dead at the scene when an elite team of French police arrived. The attacker was shot by police and the three-year-old child was rescued by police.
This is the second attack related to the terrorist organization conducted during this year’s celebration of Ramadan. The first attack was the shooting in Orlando, Florida at the Pulse nightclub that killed 49 individuals. This attack has been noted as the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. That shooter, Omar Mateen, allegedly pledged himself to the Islamic state before he was shot and killed by police.
Ramadan is a month of prayer and fasting for the Muslim community, as the community practices self-control and reflection in an attempt to understand the suffering of the poor and less fortunate. Ramadan is also a time when terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS increase attacks.
Extra precautionary measures have been taken in Paris, in an attempt to prevent a repeat of the Paris attacks last November. With the Euro 2016 soccer tournament underway, warnings of terrorist attacks have law enforcement on high alert.
The last few attacks, led by individuals prompted by the Islamic state, are difficult to predict and prevent. While some of these individuals have been monitored by authorities, some have flown under the radar completely.
