The first night of the DNC was filled with emotions, some good and high-spirited, while others were filled with sadness and anger. The main conflict was that of Hillary Clinton being the Democratic Nominee over the very popular Bernie Sanders. Though many of the speakers conveyed the understanding of such feelings they also spoke to unifying the party in support of Hillary.
Michelle Obama, whose husband Barrack Obama actually won the Democratic Nomination over Hillary in 2008, spoke on behalf of Hillary Clinton. She delivered an amazing speech and eventually teared up when talking about what it would mean to her, Malia and Sasha to see a woman elected president, it was an instantly memorable moment.
Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the mayor of Baltimore opened the convention which was great for her own publicity, even if she did forget to gavel in the convention. Though she made up for it with an epic reaction to the realization of what she had done and was cheered for such.
Sarah Silverman, a comedian made a serious attempt to push the divide within the party toward Hilary Clinton. She even went so far as to grab the microphone after she finished and announce that those who claim to be Bernie or bust were quote “being ridiculous”.
To close the first night Bernie Sanders took to the stage where he received a loud and extended applause, close to three minutes. Sanders spoke to the heart of what he believed was causing the divide. He stated he understand that he understood that many were unhappy with the results as he said “I think its fair to say that no one is more disappointed than I am”.
Mr. Sanders spoke about the importance of this election asking people to imagine Donald Trumps Supreme Court Nominees. He said that it is very important that Hilary Clinton becomes the next President and that he gives his support to her.
The night could be summed as interesting and where the party is heading may be made clear in the next few days.
