Race relations have been a hot-button issue in the United States for many years. In recent months, issues between the police and the African-American community have been at the forefront of the nation’s attention. It seems as if this is now spilling over into the judicial system. According to CNN, the Supreme Court has been divided on cases relating to race. This news has many wondering what the final outcome will be.
The news comes at a trying time for the United States Supreme Court. CNN is reporting that not only has the group been dealing with the death of Antonin Scalla, but has also been having issues as the Senate has not taken any action on the nomination that President Barack Obama made. The president nominated Appeals Court Judge Merrick Garland. Many feel as though the judge is more than qualified for the job, but others are not happy with the president’s nomination. The Supreme Court will soon be tackling several cases that deal with race, and the tension inside and outside of the group will surely make things difficult for them as these cases approach.
The struggles with recent cases arise as many of the court judges are making very public and deliberate statements about race in the country. Some of their comments make it very clear as to where they stand on the issues of race in the United States. While some clearly see the issues that minorities in the US are facing others are standing very strongly on the other side of the argument and skeptical about the validity of the claims. For example, CNN released some statements that Justice Ruth Bade Ginsburg made about tension between the police and protesters in Minnesota and Louisiana.
“We never realized what was the promise of the 60’s with all the equality legislation, the Fair Housing Act, the Voting Rights Act, Title VI, we still live in a highly segregated society. Black communities and white communities.Black schools and white schools.”
People of the US expect the Supreme Court to set aside some of their own personal beliefs and look at the laws put in place by the nation to come to a fair decision. While debating these racially charged cases, one can only hope the group is able to do so.
