Bohemian Rhapsody, named after one of the band’s most popular songs, is centered around the perspective of lead singer Freddie Mercury and is set during a 15-year period, starting with the formation of Queen and concluding with their performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert, six years before Mercury died from AIDS. The teaser trailer claims “the only thing more extraordinary than their music is his story.”

The film stars Rami Malek who has won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as protagonist Elliot Anderson in the critically acclaimed and hit USA Network TV series Mr. Robot.

Malek as Elliot is a stunning character portrait that truly reflects a modern world dominated by the pros and cons of technology. In the Bohemian Rhapsody teaser trailer Malek definitely resembles Mercury and seems to have the same atmosphere of the legendary singer. It will be very exciting to see what Malek does in this role since it’s very different from the antisocial Elliot character.

Bohemian Rhapsody also stars Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers. Originally the film was being directed by Bryan Singer but due to complications, he was replaced by Dexter Fletcher.

The teaser is mostly shots of concerts and parties with crazed, obsessed fans. There are also multiple shots of Mercury and Queen throughout the ages. These quick teases can allure excitement, even if you somehow have never heard of Queen or listened to one of the band’s many hit songs.

The format of the teaser trailer is exciting alone but it’s thrill is increased by how it mixes some of Queen’s best songs: “We Will Rock You,” “Another One Bites the Bust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” etc. Surely you have heard one of these songs and hearing their lyrics and beats can cause you to reflect on your past when you listened to this music to have a good time or cope with a broken heart.

This teaser video is a miniature example of a “Best Of” album but done in the best way possible. After watching this video, it’s very likely that you’ll want to listen to the full version of these classic songs.

Its a teaser trailer, so there’s not much dialogue. But there is a great line from Malek’s Mercury. Malek mocks a manager who doesn’t like the length of the six minute long “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Malek replies, “I pity your wife if you think six minutes is forever.”

This line does a fantastic job at portraying the characteristics of Mercury and establishing tone, similar to how the multiple shots that spans across years present a Mercury who lives to have a good time.

There’s also a clear reason why the film is called Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s not just because the song is one of the most popular Queen songs but also because the songs speaks on the chaos of life. It’s energetic and emotional.

That’s what this film will hopefully be. The teaser doesn’t really show it but one can bet that the official trailer will show that with success, there’s always pain.

Bohemian Rhapsody will rock you in theatres on November 2nd. In the meantime, you can start listening to a Queen playlist.
