“Vampire Diaries” fans, if you thought the vampire universe was coming to an end after the series finale of “The Originals” then you may have to think again. The CW has officially picked up “The Originals” spinoff called, “Legacies.”

In the season four finale of “The Originals,” after Hope Mikaelson was sent to the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted ran by “Vampire Diaries” natives Caroline and Alaric, rumors started to fly about a possible spinoff. The rumors grew when “The Originals” made the decision to cast Danielle Rose Russell to play a teenage Hope for the fifth and final season of the show.

In August 2017, CW president Mark Pedowitz announced on stage that the TCA summer press tour that him and “Originals/TVD” showrunner Julie Plec were discussing a potential spinoff. “There’s been many conversations about the character of Hope,” said Pedowitz.

In March 2018, it was announced that the potential spinoff was in active development even though a pilot episode was not ordered yet. But, the potential cast was set to include everyone’s favorite history teacher, “Vampire Diaries” star, Matt Davis, as well as Quincy Fouse, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant and Aria Shahghasemi.

Finally, the CW officially gave the greenlight and gave a series order for “The Originals” spinoff called, “Legacies.” The new spinoff will be led by executive producers, Julie Plec, Brett Matthews, Leslie Morgenstein, and Gina Girolamo.

What Will “Legacies” Be About?

The new series will tell the story about the next generation of supernatural beings at the Salvatore Boarding School of the Young and Gifted. The show will be led by 17-year-old Hope, along with Alaric and his twin daughters, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman. The show will also feature other young witches, vampires, and werewolves. Will this next generation be able to control their impulses or once again wreak havoc on Mystic Falls? We’ll find out on Thursdays this fall on the CW.

How Did ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Set Up ‘Legacies?’ (‘Vampire Diaries’ Spoilers Ahead!)

In the series finale of “The Vampire Diaries” in March 2017, after Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) sacrifices his live to Elena Gilbert’s (Nina Dobrev) and the town of Mystic Falls, brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) finally moves out of the infamous Salvatore Boarding house.

Damon makes the decision to give Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) and Caroline Forbes (Candice King) what he thinks Stefan’s last wish would be, to turn the home back into not only a boarding house, but a boarding school for gifted children. In the finale episode, Caroline also receives quite the generous donation from longtime admirer and “Original” vampire, Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan).

How Will ‘The Originals’ Set Up “Legacies?’ (‘The Originals’ Spoilers Ahead!)

This question is still, TBD. The final season of ‘The Originals’ is currently still airing on Wednesdays at 9 on the CW. The final season so far has featured Caroline talking Klaus down from making dangerous decisions on more than one occasion. In an episode two weeks ago, Hope’s mother Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin) sacrificed her life to save Hope and Klaus. The aftermath of Hayley’s death will most like be a major plot point in the new series.

As for how else the ‘Original’ spinoff will tie into its own spinoff, that is still up in the air. The final episode of ‘The Originals,’ will air within the next few weeks on the CW.
