2017 has been quite the year for caped crusaders. In its second weekend, “Thor: Ragnarok” has topped the box office bringing in $56.6 million, contributing to an overall global total of $650 million. “Thor: Ragnarok” has reversed a box-office slump that has been happening through October and has left 2017’s overall gross down 5 percent. This is the twelfth Marvel film to pass the $500 million mark consecutively and gets “Thor: Ragnarok” on the list of the 10 highest grossing films of 2017.
“Thor: Ragnarok” is the third installment in the Thor series following 2011’s “Thor” and 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World”. “Thor: Ragnarok”’s predecessors have also performed very well in box offices. The first installment, “Thor” made $449.3 million globally. “Thor: The Dark World” upped the game by making $644.6 million worldwide. “Thor: Ragnarok” already passes both of the prequels is very impressive and holds Marvel’s status as a force to be reckoned with.
In “Thor: Ragnarok”, Thor finds himself imprisoned on the other side of the universe. While being held captive, Thor finds himself being pit against his fellow Avenger and former ally, Hulk, in a gladiatorial contest. Thor then leads a journey to survive and races to save his home planet while saving his civilization from evil forces.
“Thor: Ragnarok” has stars Chris Hemsworth returning as “Thor”, Tom Hiddleston as his brother and enemy, “Loki” and Mark Ruffalo from the Avengers and separate series as “The Hulk”. Earlier this year, it was introduced that Thor will be ditching his long locks for a dramatic shorter haircut, and it has gotten mixed reviews from fans.

Thor Ragnarock (Theater): funny as hell. ? all the characters. I am on the fence about Thor’s haircut & Idris Elba was underutilized.

“Thor: Ragnarok” will be facing some competition in the box office in the next few weeks. This Friday, the highly anticipated “Justice League” will launch into theaters, Disney-Pixar’s “Coco” will premiere November 22nd, and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will come into play December 15th. This is going to definitely help box offices wrap 2017 on a high note, but it does challenge “Thor: Ragnarok” to stay on the 2017 10 highest grossing films list.
Critics have been raving about this movie and giving it positive reviews. “Thor: Ragnarok” currently holds a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade on CinemaScore exit polls. The movie has been praised for not taking itself too seriously. The slap-stick comedy that occurs in this movie does hurt the overall mission that Thor faces, but not too much.
“Thor: Ragnarok” is still in theaters. There are many upcoming Marvel Universe movies that deserve as much love as Thor. Upcoming movies include, “Black Panther” on February 16, 2018, “Avengers: Infinity War” on May 4, 2018, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” on July 6, 2018, “Captain Marvel” on March 8, 2019, the fourth Avengers movie on May 3, 2019, the sequel to “Spider-Man: Homecoming” on July 5, 2019, and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2020.
