Tracee Ellis Ross on Mascara, the Magic of Facials, and “Straight” Brows

Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross is no stranger to fame; Ross starred in the groundbreaking comedy Girlfriends from 2000 to 2008, not to mention her mother is none than other than singer extraordinaire Diana Ross. In an interview with beauty site Into the Gloss, the actress shares her beauty routine, her thoughts on TV characters wearing makeup in bed, and the importance of a good night’s sleep.

Ross explains that her love of cosmetics started when she was a little girl watching her mother apply makeup before performances.

“I would sit quietly on the dressing room floor and watch her put her face on. I think she looks most beautiful in the morning with no makeup on…it’s my favorite look on women. I personally like the way skin looks without makeup. People cover up the imperfections, but I think they’re beautiful.”

Ross continued by sharing that she wants her makeup to be truly natural on Black-ish because her character is like any other busy woman; she’s a mom to four kids while also juggling the roles of a wife and a doctor.

“When I’m in bed, I do not have mascara on–that’s a pet peeve of mine in television, when people wake up in bed and have glossy lips. It’s confusing to me.”

Something Ross swears by is a good facial. When she’s working, Ross will get a facial about every other week. Facialist Terri Lawton even provides Ross a serum that she applies before any other skincare products.

What is the “hardest makeup thing” for Ross? Shaping eyebrows, a difficulty she shares with a lot of women.

“Growing up, I had the teeniest little brows. They were really thin for a while. I’m loving this, when they’re straight…I like when they’re straight as opposed to arched. I feel like your eyebrows really frame your face.”

The biggest tip Ross can offer her fans and beauty lovers? Making sure to get a long, peaceful beauty sleep.

“”I do a true eight hours…When I’m working I often have to get up at 4AM, which makes it really hard to get my eight hours, and it starts to dwindle, and I start to see it in my skin–I see it around my mouth…”

Ross’s beauty routine and advice come as a welcome change to the high-maintenance routines and expensive products utilized by other celebrities. As one reader stated in the comments section, however, it would have been nice to hear about Ross’s hair routine. After all, the actress’s hair is gorgeous and is certainly one of her most distinguishable features.
