With the latest developments on the Paul Manafort case, there have not been a lot of updates in the Robert Mueller-led criminal investigation on President Trump’s campaign. However, it seems to be that even his team of lawyers has not been updated about the case, as they reportedly don’t know just how much Mueller has been told about previous campaign-related actions.

White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, was interviewed by the special counsel’s prosecutors throughout the past couple of months. Although Trump’s team remains confident that McGahn didn’t reveal compromising information about the president during the first 30 hours of interviews, two people close to the president have stated that the lawyers have only been told a part of the discussed information.

This lack of specific information has also been caused by the fact that the lawyers didn’t ask for the information to begin with. McGahn’s lawyer just gave them an overview of the conversation, not offering many details. Despite the team’s confidence, it is important to remember that McGahn is not one of the president’s lawyers, and therefore would not feel obligated to defend him and instead defend the presidency in general.

Law experts have pointed out that the team should’ve asked the counsel what exactly he was planning to say to the prosecutors. The president’s lawyers have the right to know what he intended to say before going into the interviews. To make matters even more publicly embarrassing for the president and his lawyers, they reportedly found out that they didn’t know all the information after the New York Times posted an article about the cooperation between McGahn and the prosecutors.

The president released some statements on Twitter after the article was released, stating that McGahn wasn’t necessarily a “RAT” because of his collaborations. However, at the same time, he ended up legitimizing the article’s reporting about a matter that wasn’t public until said moment. They read:

The failing @nytimes wrote a Fake piece today implying that because White House Councel Don McGahn was giving hours of testimony to the Special Councel, he must be a John Dean type “RAT.” But I allowed him and all others to testify – I didn’t have to. I have nothing to hide and have demanded transparency so that this Rigged and Disgusting Witch Hunt can come to a close. So many lives have been ruined over nothing – McCarthyism at its WORST! Yet Mueller & his gang of Dems refuse to look at the real crimes on the other side – Media is even worse!”
